The rudbekia is blooming and the bees are buzzing! I love how these blooms have spread all over the fields, and they are lush in this year of heavy rain. I loved painting in this peaceful spot in New Melle, in the shade of a tree across the street. I love the shapes and lines of the buildings as they stand together, testament to the growth of this church over time. New Melle is full of lovely places to paint, and i only wish I had more time here. I'm happy this painting found a new home that night, too! Painting number 4870 in 4870 days.
What a lovely day to paint Mount Pleasant Winery! The weather was perfect, and I chose to paint a small one in ink and watercolor. I had already drawn a similar scene in pen and ink, deciding at the last minute not to add the color. I always say, "If in doubt - don't." So, I just had to finish my original vision on this one. My mom comes to visit my chickens every afternoon, feeding them some of the barley grass that I sprout for them. She has trouble remembering all of their names, and has asked me for a painting, with their names listed, on multiple occasions. So, here they are, all lined up, as they come to me for goodies. The flowers are really stunning along the path to the LongHouse! It was a pleasure to paint them at twilight, when the garden was still. My daughters painted nearby, and we visited as we finished up. It was a lovely afternoon to paint the splash fountain at Powell Gardens for Summit Art Plein Air! I love painting here, and have never before seen the splash pad running! The streams remind me of the Nichols fountain when on full blast. I only wish I'd had time to stay and paint all day! Painting number in days.

I got drenched painting this one in the rain, as did my palette and pochade box. I had to keep dumping the water out of both just to finish my painting! When I know rain is getting close, I try to cover my panel as quickie as possible with paint, leaving no bare surface. Whatever doesn't get oil paint on it absorbs the rain and humidity, and resists further oil application. So, the tiny bits that i missed had to dry before I could add more paint. Through the struggle of it all, I finished with a painting I am happy with! Painting number 5163 in 5163 days.
What an honor to find this painting was awarded 2nd place at the Lake Quivira Paint Out!! It was super fun painting here with BOTH my daughters for our first plein air event together. It had been 9 years since I had painted here, and I found myself drawn to the waterfront. Last time, there was a yacht race in progress, but today the water was still. With those lovely sailboats waiting on shore, the wet ground reflected light as though they were on the water. The painting unfolded naturally as I visited with my daughters, each finishing their own paintings. I'm looking forward to all of our painting time ahead. I chose the top of a hill on a cold, windy day for painting Stone Hill Winery for the first time! The view from here is magnificent, and the sun came out to light up the scene after a morning of rain. There are many buildings up here to paint, and an amazing view of all of Hermann. We had a wonderful painting day - perfect weather and lovely places. After a morning at the Boettcher Farm, I found this lovely scene at the Lenaur Farm. How could I possibly resist painting such a lovely covered bridge?!! In an effort to paint fast and fresh, I only used this simple palette, and mixed my colors from these. The Quick Paint tonight was at the Train Yard - the Fairfield Mules were playing football, and I was painting as fast as I could. The rain was coming, and I was protecting my panel from a few sprinkles. Dark clouds, thunder and lightening approached as the remnants of Helene roared in. What an amazing sunset unfolded, after the game was called, followed by increasing rain. That was a full rainbow over the high school in Fairfield! I finished it and framed it in the rain, thrilled with the experience of it all. Spencer loved painting here, and he would have loved this show in the sky. Perhaps he even had a hand in it. I'm happy this painting has a new home, too! Painting number 5175 in 5175 days.
Oh, how I love painting old country roads, and Missouri is full of them! Winding through the countryside, the landscape unfolds into countless paintings.
