Studio in the Woods

So worth the uneven stance to sketch the dramatic perch of this studio on the hill!  I walked all around this cabin before returning to this spot at the very edge of the woods.  Standing awkwardly in the incline, I knew this must be my vantage!  With water resistant ink, I began my sketch. As I completed my composition, I started working in the water soluble inks.  I added a wet brush to these areas to wash out the ink a bit, gaining those midtones. I love surrounding myself in nature, allowing the landscape to seep into my painting.  That is the true benefit of working en plein air. Painting number 3115 in 3115 days

Catnap

I'm working on a few gallery pieces this week, and this is one for an upcoming animal show.  I am working from an old photo of a favorite cat who is no longer with us, so the work is bittersweet.  First I paint in the masses using a brush, coming in with thicker paint on a palette knife.  I really do love painting animals, and the knife is perfect for adding texture to the fur.  I like the mood of this, I think I'll let it rest for the night, and look with fresh eyes in the morning.  Painting number 2970 in 2970 days.

Casper

Focusing on portrait work is so much fun with this sweet baby boy on my easel!  I find I can learn SO MUCH by taking deep dives into certain areas of my work. I have long been a portrait artist, first in graphite, later in ink and acrylic, and some in oils.  I'm very comfortable in the black and white, and am now exploring the color like I haven't before. I grow with each painting, and I feel like I am seeing the planes of the face in new ways. Why not get playful with the paint?  I can't wait to see what unfolds as I study portraiture in depth!  Painting number 2880 in 2880 days.
