Log Cabin and Depot

 

It was fun to sketch the log cabin and Elmore depot along the North Coast Inland Trail!  I love that we got to tour them, too!  Cool places of interest are open along the trail at certain hours and days.  These two are open every Sunday from 2 to 5, May through October.  It's such a great idea, and it makes the trail a destination to go see something new.  Mom and I enjoyed the buildings before meeting friends for ice cream right up the street. Mom is getting to visit with so many friends in town.  Painting number 4941 in 4941 days. 

Cabin in the Clover

I am SO at home in a pasture, painting a lovely log cabin homestead on the hill.  This scene grabbed me as soon as I arrived on location, but another scene pulled me away.  After finishing the first painting, I returned to this spot to paint a quick capture, and ended up looking it more!  I'm happy that I was able to get them both finished before heading back up to town!  It has been another beautiful plein air day!

Afternoon at the Cabin

It was a lovely morning for painting a log cabin in the woods, and I just couldn't resist painting the morning light.  I had to keep moving closer to my subject to stay in the shade of the outermost walnut tree.  The sun was in and out today, so I marked that light early to be sure I'd have it.  I do so love these rural Missouri homesteads. This painting now Showing at Gallery Zeke in Steelville, and is my 5061st painting in 5061 days. 

Mary's Slice of Heaven

I love when I first land on a spot and it calls to me to paint it!  A special private estate paint during the Steelville Plein Air, it was a treat to experience this place with pen and ink.  I loved the rather dramatic view from the side of the front lawn, so I set up drawing tucked in close to a tree for shade.  Summer is here and so is the heat!  I used one of my favorite TWSBI fountain pens to draw this coming in with a little water to get my midtones.  I love the nostalgic feel of pen and ink - especially on handmade paper.  What a pleasure it has been, drawing while music played in the backyard, with our amazing host offering sustenance and smiles.  I have the best job ever!  Painting number 3095 in 3095 days. 

Cabin in the Woods

I just can't pass up a chance to sketch such a great log cabin!  It feels like stepping back in time to stand in this place, smelling the fragrance of the large lilac bush wafting my way.  With my favorite TWSBI mini fountain pen, I sketch the lines with water resistant ink.  I then go back in with another favorite TWSBI mini loaded with water soluble ink.  With a water brush pen I move the ink around a bit.  I love to spend a little time painting in a peaceful place like this.  Painting number 3045 in 3045 days. 

Log Cabin Magnolias

When I scouted this location, I could not decide whether to paint this cabin with magnolias, or the blue frame house with forsythia just across the walk.  SO, I set up in the middle and painted one and then the other for this Daniel Boone quick paint!  The blooms of spring are fleeting, and it seems like they fade away before I can paint all that I see!  Since this is a quick paint, I begin by laying in masses, the lights and darks, meeting edges occasionally.  I wait until I am further along before committing to those edges.  I like to squint at this stage, allowing the painting to come together intuitively.  This is especially helpful when I'm in a hurry.  Once I near the finish, I check my edges.  Happy with this one, I turn my easel and begin another.  Love those days when I can paint two before heading back!  Painting number 1944 in 1944 days.
