Oh how gorgeous the sunsets of January are! Especially lovely on these warm days, I must take advantage of the beauty! We hit 66 degrees today - a record, and winter looms on the horizon tomorrow. So, with ink and watercolor I try to capture the sunset on my newest Shizen smooth handmade paper. I think sunsets are so much easier in oil - but how better to improve the skills than with practice? I'm going to remember this balmy evening tomorrow night when the freezing rain is moving in! Yikes! Painting number 2570 in 2570 days.

How could I possibly resist a sweet little goat in a Santa hat? With so much personality, this little darling was a joy to paint! With each goat I paint, I gain a better understanding of the shapes and planes that form them. I use sketchy little lines with an India ink pen for my initial marks, and then follow with my watercolor half pans. I am getting so much milage out of these Watercolor Confection sets by Prima, it is really quite remarkable! I wonder if their latest color set is out? Christmas is coming, after all! I have only recently started painting goats - and oh how I love them! Their form, varied colors, and expressions make them wonderful subjects for painting! How am I only now discovering them? What started as a suggestion from a dear friend to help her friend find goat artwork for a tattoo, has quickly become an ink and watercolor obsession! I've not painted many goats before this month, but now I'm drawn to them! With their rich coloring and bright personalities, they are irresistible! Who knew I would have so much fun painting goats? Always intrigued by their playful personalities, I am now getting to explore them with ink and watercolor. As with everything, the correct likeness is all about the angles. On this one, I started with the top of the head, working down the planes of the face. It always feels funny to me to "shrink" the body so when it is in the background. I am careful to connect those lines where I see them, as they branch out from the head. It always works to stay with what I see, instead of what my brain is telling me! Painting number 2501 in 2501 days.

Oh my! What a wonderful goat to paint! His markings are fabulous, and his personality shows in every pose! It is such a treat to hone my "goat painting" skills on such a beauty! It just makes me so happy just to paint him, could this be "goat therapy"? Painting number 2498 in 2498 days.
