Painting during the evening hours is a lovely experience.  I watch as the sun sets and the light fades, often sketching my scene in paint while I can still see well.  I like to work by the light of street lamps, and it can become pretty dark at times. The street quiets with only a few passers by a I work on another piece.   When the owners of the cottage stopped by to turn in the lights, I just HAD to capture the magic!  I set my gallery painting aside and started this one in it's place, complete with waving flag on the front porch.  What a sweet cottage to paint in historic Augusta - and I'm so happy it has a new family, the owners of the Honeybee Vineyard. I purchased a gorgeous tea rose wreath from a local shop, the Wandering Owl, which was made from grapevines from their vineyard!  I will now think of them every time I walk through my front door!  Painting number 5044 in 5044 days. 

Cottage Garden

 

I love these beautiful summer days for painting in a garden!  Flanked by gorgeous hydrangeas, the view towards the "Bride House" was irresistible.  With ink and watercolor I painted the garden beauty, coming back in with a bit more ink at the end.  I love when the watercolor mingles in the wet masses of the trees!  So fun to push that paint - even while I'm mindful is the thinner paper on the easel.  Every paper is handmade, so each is a new exploration in paint!  Painting number 3815 in 3815 days. 

Autumn Cottage

 

Happy November!  Today I'm thankful for autumn color hanging on - so I can paint it still!!  Rarely are the leaves so beautiful into November, so I am taking advantage of it!  The Union Cemetery Historical Society is in this cottage in the grounds of the cemetery.. I had intended to paint some of the headstones in that setting, but my love of old houses took control of my brushes, and soon the focus was cottage and color.  I did include a few stones loosely rendered, to honor the place.  I hope for more lovely days like this - to capture the season in paint before those leaves fall!  Painting number 4382 in 4382 days.  

Cottage Roses

What a treat to find these roses in full bloom at the cottage in Steelville!  With so many venues to paint, I had to squeeze in a little time to paint this, too!  At their peak, these lush knock out roses were a joy to paint with their bold color and upright forms.  I think I'd like to paint another to include the window and a wider view of the blooms.  I'll soon be painting the roses at Loose Park, so I think practice may be in order!  I long for the luxury of time to REALLY study their forms as I paint.  Maybe one day...!  Painting number 3096 in 3096 days.

I love finding charming towns in the places I visit to paint!  Dunedin, Florida is a hidden gem close to the west coast of Florida.  Stumbling into this town during their Mardi Gras festival, we had a family day of eating, shopping and of course I had to get in some ink and watercolor!  One of these sketches was seen by the owner of this cottage, and she asked me to commit it to paint!  Love the charm of this place - and it was a joy to get to paint this!  Painting number 2627 in 2627 days.

These cottages in old town Dunedin are full of charm!  Nestled between picket fences and flowering bushes, spring arrives early on the gulf coast of Florida!  So glad I had time for a couple more ink watercoler paintings!  Painting number 2619 in 2619 days.

Kathys Kottage Inked

What a treasure I found when arriving in Tonganoxie!  This was literally the first place I scouted, and I stayed for TWO paintings - one in ink and the other in oil!  With such a charming cottage, I tried two different approaches compositionally.  The first in portrait orientation, and the second in landscape, unable to choose a favorite!  I liked how the trees reached up to the sky, leaving all that dreamy light through the branches.  I could have stayed all day to paint, with an abundance of subject matter all around!  So happy this drawing has a new home!  Painting number 2052 in 2052 days.

Ephraim Cottage in Watercolor

I have never watched a watercolor artist complete a painting from start to finish before last week.  Vladislav Yeliseyev is an amazing artist, and watching how he approached the plein air landscape was eye opening!  I have only worked wet on wet before, without the foggiest notion on how to add another layer.  Watching that one artist work has inspired me in a whole new way!  Can't wait to see what this media can really do!   Painting number 1666 in 1666 days.

Lakeside Cottage

What a gorgeous morning along the edge of Lake Erie!  This vintage cottage is surrounded by flowers spilling out onto the lawn. I spent the hours visiting with passers by as they strolled the path, and finished as my parents came by to visit!  Another perfect day in paradise!  Painting number 1648 in 1648 days.

Cottage Illumination

Here is the nocturne I rushed off to paint last night again in old town Overland Park - a renovated 1908 bungalow.  Craig Sole is a such a kind, gracious host!  In the two times I have been there painting, he has come out with cold water with key limes, lemons and oranges - and last night he brought out split pea soup to nourish us!  This was a fun paint - so much to see with the indoor lights and the street lights on.  There is quite a glare on this photo - so I will try to get another tomorrow in the daylight.  The sky is actually a darker blue, and the house reads whiter than it really is. This is my 149th painting in 149 days as the Stems event comes to a close tomorrow.
