Chapel at Big Cedar

 

It was a lovely day for painting the chapel at Big Cedar! It has been years since I painted in the Big Cedar Paintout, and I had been longing to come!  This place is even more beautiful than before, with paintings in every direction!  I only wish I had more time to paint the beautiful cabins and vintage buildings, too! 

Chapel in the Snow

 

The chapel at Powell Gardens is such a peaceful place to visit and paint. The walking trail that meanders to this place is lovely, with many painting spots along the way.  Winter is just a breath away, and the snow only makes this place more beautiful. Hyde Chapel

Today was my Live Painting demo in front of the Admin Building at the YMCA of the Rockies.  I arrived early to scout my location, and found I couldn't resist painting Hyde Chapel with the lovely stand of lupine in the foreground!  I started first with an ink sketch, then started adding on color.  Many people came by to visit and watch the progress as I worked. I finished early and worked on this scene in my current sketchbook, as well.  I'll try to get this one framed and turned in to the Library here tomorrow, where I'm helping with story time and making bookmarks afterward.  Painting number 4555 in 4555 days. 

St Vincent's in the Vineyard

The St Vincent's in the Vineyard Chapel is beautifully situated on the rise of the hill overlooking Chaumette Winery and vineyards.  The gardens show this place to it's best advantage, so of course it has been on my radar to paint!  Too busy to paint when I visited with Mom, I am now taking ink, watercolor and hot wax to rice paper, to capture this special place. Watercolor Batik is a very special journey, and I will be teaching a workshop on my technique March 25 and 26 at Silver Sycamore Gallery in Sainte Genevieve.  Artist Reception on Friday night at 6:00 - come see this painting in person and watch me demo!  Painting number 3720 in 3720 days. 

Chapel at Bridal Cave

 Making history in possibly the coolest place I've ever painted - inside the Chapel of the Bridal Cave!   We are the first artists to plein air paint in this cave!!  What a once in a lifetime experience!!  I didn't know this would be possible, so I was dressed for the high heat warning day of near 100 degrees. Donning a jacket, I walked into this gorgeous, chilly cave and absolutely marveled at the beauty. We could set up anywhere in the first two "rooms", and I chose the chapel. Many couples have been married here, and this is a very special place.  This room was colder than the first and cold water dripped from the ceiling, splashing on my legs from the walls.  I went back out for my rain jacket, and that helped to at least keep the top of me dry.  By the time I finished this magnificent place, I was shivering so much I could hardly manage my brushes and close up my easel.  My feet and sandals were completely wet and so very cold!  It took an hour of standing in the sun at 97 degrees to finally warm up enough to start losing layers.  And it was SO VERY WORTH EVERY BIT OF THE DISCOMFORT!  I am so happy to be among the first artists ever to paint here.  What an honor!  Painting number 2129 in 2129 days. 

Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel

After the Opening Reception at Cathy Kline's Art Gallery for Paint Parkville, I walked across the street to draw this beautiful chapel!  With amazing light and a low vantage, I began my drawing in ink.  With such complicated architecture, I found myself measuring out my lines with the long edge of my fountain pen.  Holding it out straight armed, and measuring all of the relationships, I finally got the line drawing finished.  I love these historic stone churches!  Painting number 2376 in 2376 days.

Elmwood in Ink

As I started this rendering of the historic Elmwood Cemetery, my intention was to simply draw this landscape with pen and ink.  As I completed the complex drawing, it seemed to call for some color.  So, I pulled out my classic Prima "Watercolor Confections" pan set, and added a little color with my brush pens.  I can't believe I like this set so much!  I wish I had all of their collections!  They are small, I can pack them in pocket or purse, and who knew I would be so happy with the brush pens?  I thought I could only use my favorite, very pricy watercolor brushes for such work!  Many, many thanks to fellow artist Peggy Wilson for turning me on to these babies!  This painting makes 1449 in 1449 days  :)
