Morning at Cave Point

The morning light is breathtaking at Cave Point!  From high on my perch, I could see right into that yellow green water to the rock slabs below, and I had to paint it.  As I set my tripod up very close to the edge, I checked to see if the ground was solid under that back leg.  It was not!  So I backed up a couple inches to prevent my favorite easel from dropping to the water below!  Very quiet on arrival, the tourists were in full force by the time to I packed up my gear. It became so busy that I was a little afraid of someone bumping me over the edge!  Just another glorious day at the office!  Painting number 2411 in 2411 days.

This amazing place is certainly a feast for the eyes!  I think I could spend every day painting on these bluffs, and never tire of it!  Lake Michigan is ever changing, as the sky - and the color combinations are endless.  This is the kind of landscape I seldom see in Missouri - so I really enjoy the chance to study the moving water!  Waves and crashing water are certainly a challenge!  I have been using my Querilla Painter box and tripod since April, and I officially love it!  This medium French Resistance easel is the perfect compliment to this artist's whims.  If I ever get another, it will be the same style, perhaps in the large size - to give me another option in the field.  If they made a "mini" - I would buy it too!  LOVE this set up!  So light, I can hike into the wilderness without a care about weight.  This dramatic painting is my 1307th painting in 1307 days.

This park is absolutely amazing!  When you first enter the park, there is a long, winding road in, with nothing to either side but trees and grasses.  The trees shorten and become more sparse, and then you come to a parking lot with a gazebo - with people exiting their cars and all following a particular path into the woods.  Pretty strange - but we decided to follow the crowd - and it led to the most spectacular cliffs which dropped off suddenly!  There was a wooden sign before you came close to the trees exclaiming that “dangerous conditions exist and to not let children play unsupervised”!  Well - no wonder, because anyone could just drop off all along the coast!  Hard to believe this is still left in it’s natural state - but I am SO glad it is!  What an exciting place to paint!  Painting number 944 in 944 days.

Wow!!  What a magical place this Cave Point County Park is!!  Located in Door County, Wisconsin, I have never explored this park before.  Encouraged by another artist to check it out, it was the “find” of the whole week!  Returning twice to paint at this location, this is the first of the paintings.  Set up on top of the cliff for this vantage, the cool breezes blowing in from Lake Michigan kept us comfortable, and our music was the wind blowing through the trees and the loud “canon shots” made by the waves crashing against the caves beneath us!  I love this beautiful setting - it is magic just to be here, and a dream to actually be painting it!  This one makes 941 in 941 days.
