Autumn at the Historical Society

 

I LOVE painting the colors of fall - while they last!  The autumn leaves are always glorious at Union Cemetery this time of year - and the historical society farmhouse makes the perfect backdrop.  Those cool shadows make the warm sunlit leaves shine, and that color is reflected on the fallen leaves as well.  Such a lovely time of year, and I can already see a shift just past peak in our color.  This season's color is swiftly passing!  Painting number 3948 in 3948 days.  

Autumn Cottage

 

Happy November!  Today I'm thankful for autumn color hanging on - so I can paint it still!!  Rarely are the leaves so beautiful into November, so I am taking advantage of it!  The Union Cemetery Historical Society is in this cottage in the grounds of the cemetery.. I had intended to paint some of the headstones in that setting, but my love of old houses took control of my brushes, and soon the focus was cottage and color.  I did include a few stones loosely rendered, to honor the place.  I hope for more lovely days like this - to capture the season in paint before those leaves fall!  Painting number 4382 in 4382 days.

I love spending Halloween morning painting at the historic Union Cemetery with friends! There is still some great autumn color here, though it is past the peak.  When setting up, my original plan was to concentrate on the trees, possibly leaving out the building.  With my love of historic buildings, I couldn't do it. I shifted my easel to the right to position the caretakers cottage more effectively.  I handled the whole painting rather loosely, and painted in under an hour.  What a lovely way to start the day!  Painting number 4381 in 4381 days. 

Historical Society at Union Cemetery

Love these gorgeous autumn days where the weather is perfect and the colors are shining!  With this 7x5 Guerrilla Painter thumb box pochade, I can store 2 wet paintings and all of my supplies under that shelf!  My palette is an Altoid tin - which closes up and stores inside.  I have attached a purse like strap to it, so it looks very like an artsy purse - until I open it up!  This little guy is probably my second favorite pochade box - right behind my French Resistance box!  Painting number 2836 in 2836 days! 

Union Cemetery Museum

 Union Cemetery is so gorgeous in October!  With autumn colors on, the landscape is at it's best this time of year.  This sweet little building is now home to the Historical Society - and my subject du jour with the Monday Morning Watercolorists!  I normally use my watercolors on Mondays, but early this morning I felt the need to pack my 5x7 thumb box pochade, too.  When autumn colors are popping I lean to my oils every time.  This crazy palette needs to be organized!  It started with saving paint from a broken glass palette all willy-nilly to this tiny Altoid tin. Then I dropped in paint where I could squeeze it in - and now we have this very textual piece of art!  I am going to fix up another tonight - so the next time I need this palette, it will be in order!  Painting number 2835 in 2835 days. 

Caretaker's Path

Since I first saw this house years ago, I have wanted to sketch it.  These 27 acres are rolling and full of mature trees, many just starting to put on their autumn color. I am looking for the best composition, and this is my second drawing.  Some days I will draw twice and then choose a third vantage for the paint.  I think this will bee one of those days!  Painting number 1756 in 1756 days.

Caretaker's House in Autumn

I have wanted to paint in this cemetery ever since we got stuck inside it's 27 acres trying to exit the Royal's World Series parade!  All those rolling hills surrounded by a tall iron fence with only one way in and out.  The autumn color is just beginning, with reds popping behind the caretaker's house.  After drawing two ink works, I settled into this setting for my oils.  Using my Guerilla Painter thumb box, I am painting 7x5 today.  I just got a new shipment of brushes in - some with short handles, made specifically for pochade boxes!  Oh happy day!  I've been sawing off handles for years.  Who knew they came the way I needed for plein air?  Painting number 1751 in 1751 days.
