Birdwatching
This beautiful boy was one a little kitten running around here, trying to avoid our new puppy at the time. My oldest daughter scooped him up to live like a king at her house, where he reigns supreme! Today I am getting in a small oil painting as he looks out the kitchen window, to all the feathered friends he'd like to meet! I included my colorful palette and three workhorse brushes - Grey Matters and Princeton Catalysts. I literally use these every day for months, and they still look great. I love a sturdy brush for my oils! Not pictured - the knife I used for those heavy marks. Painting number 2993 in 2993 days.

Beau in Profile
After a busy day, I settled down to paint something "easy". Well, this was anything but easy! Beau is such a beautiful dog, he could be painted many different ways, but I chose this position. He holds his head like this SO often, with just that expression - I had to paint it! In such a close up, I found the planes more difficult. I pushed them one way, then the other. With the light behind him, it cast many subtle color shifts in that shadow side - and I found them tricky! I ended up spending way more time on this than expected, but I think I'm happy with it. I'll check it again in the morning, and see if anything jumps out at me. Painting number 1847 in 1847 days.

Ink Study of David
I have been studying master works, and this ink rendering is from Michaelangelo's David. This statue has a striking resemblance to my youngest son - right down to the curly locks! My youngest daughter even asked me if it was Michael! I'm using a medium black Pitt pen in my natural tan earthbound sketch journal for this one. I think the dark paper is well suited for this work, and I plan to continue in the same thread for this one. This drawing is the 1488th in 1488 days.

| Profile Study Oil on panel, 8x10 |
Today, my time is limited, so I chose to paint a profile - and did it in an hour and a half. The one in progress was maybe 40 minutes into the painting, and you can still see some of my pastel sketch lines marking the hair. As I see these two together.....there is really something I like about the first one. I know it sounds silly, since it isn't half done, but the loose strokes and the unrefined areas of light and shadow are kind of cool. In addition, I paint in north light, and this photo is taken right off my easel - so the color is pretty cool in temperature. This has me seriously considering a loose finish on the next one. Perhaps just barely a few wide strokes for the background and that is it. This may also sound crazy, but I think I like the paler eye finish on the left versus the darker one on the right. Is it crazy? This is painting number 427 in as many days - and now it is time to get ready to go out for dinner!
