Morning at Cider Barn Farm

 

What a beautiful place for an early morning quick paint!  An hour and a half was hardly enough time to capture it all!  From the little deer playing in their pen to the white swans sailing across the lake, I just had to paint it all.  There were other animals, too, but they were out of my view.  Our gracious hosts welcomed us with a delicious breakfast after we turned in our paintings.  This was a wonderful way to start my day!  Painting number 4650 in 4650 days.

What a wonderful garden path this is curving along the edge of Lake Erie!  Garden blooms flourish as the waves lap the rocky banks, and many walk to and fro.  I have painted here several times, soaking in the fragrant beauty of it all.  It makes me happy to leave my paintings where they are created!  Painting number 4590 in 4590 days. 

Myo Yin at Yoga Bliss

 

What fun it was to paint a full Myo Yin session at the Yoga Bliss Festival today!  The classes and instruction here are like none I've experienced, and many come from far off places just to be a part of this.  The sharing and caring is real here, and this event is about so much more than yoga. Lakeside Beach

This is my first Lakeside Beach painting of the plein air event - but it certainly wasn't my last!  I LOVE when a painting connects to so many!  Sitting on a bench, this view grabbed me right away.  It was the same bench my Mom and I had sat on to watch the sunset after dinner the night before.  I had already studied the scene - wishing I had enough time to paint before - so it was a natural choice this morning.  With ink and watercolor I captured the scene, and another artist joined me to visit before I finished.  It was a lovely way to start the day - and asking the first 4 paintings that literally flew out of my bag to be purchased as I arrived at my wet paint location.  What fun that was - and many others wanted this piece in those two hours.  It really does pay to be first at a wet paint sale! On the Strip

I started this one out standing on the sidewalk, close enough to jump in the car should the rain begin.  Well, I didn't get much sketching in before the clouds opened up - and I tossed my gear in the car.  The ink I use would bleed into a black mess if rained on!  So, I sketched in the car (which I'd backed into a spot for a good vantage), and resumed my line work.  Not long after, a "sketchy" guy in a truck parked beside me.  I had several friends on the street who honed in on the situation, stopping by my window, and walking to to me frequently.  Even though the rain had stopped, I finished this one in the car.  It pays to be alert to your surroundings and your intuition.  Happy to have friends looking out for me as well! La Charette Farm

This place is simply amazing!  With many acres of woods, creeks, bluffs and farm land, it is hard to focus on one subject!  When I saw the old John Deer and hay wagon, I simply had to draw them in pen and ink - and rest them in their setting.  With such a detailed sketch, the actual line work took longer than normal.  I like to do those initial lines with a water resistant ink, coming back in with an ink I can move with a little water.  This particular paper is a handmade Shizen cotton paper, and one that is tricky for me to use.  This paper resists the ink a little before accepting it, making it harder to control.  With a little effort, I bent it to my way, and this drawing now hangs in the owner's home.  Painting number 3030 in 3030 days. 

Afternoon at Noboleis

 I headed out to scout with oils on board, and when I found this spot I realized I would HAVE to use my pen and ink!   So, hauling all is my gear back to the car, I switched gears and gathered up my ink gear. Hiking down to the vineyard, I looked up at the buildings on the hill and started to sketch. With pen and ink I drew in each one, coming back in with my favorite TWSBI Diamond mini fountain pen loaded with Levenger's Raven Black ink.  With a little water I was able to achieve the mid tones I wanted, and headed back to the car to frame up.  This was the quick paint, only two hours of paint time, but it didn't take me that long.  I really love my pen and ink, and it is always a good day when I'm sketching!  This painting sold right away, and it will hang in the office of Nobeleis Vineyard.  Painting number 3028 in 3028 days. 

Downtown Parkville

It was so fun painting in Parkville again!  Main Street is full of vintage charm - and trains are a frequent visitor on these rails!  I like to draw wide angle views of vintage towns, capturing as many buildings as I can within the paper borders.  I decided to paint from the other side of the tracks this time - since one always hears a train while here.  I painted from a spot nearby on my very first painting in Parkville years ago - and I was VERY surprised by so many trains!  Haha!  I should have had earplugs that day!  See this painting in person at the Cathy Kline Art Gallery in the old depot.  Painting number 2976 in 2976 days. 

Morning at Howard Park

Oh my, what a day!  A deeply overcast morning gave way to this bright and beautiful afternoon - and the perfect beach scene for this quick paint!  Painting large at 10x20,  I really wanted this format for this scene.  So many wonderful people visited while I worked, and I had a fabulous time capturing the scene.  I had to pack up a little early to make it back to check in on time, but the extra distance was really worth the work. I just had to paint this beach!  So honored to win an award for this!  Painting number 2609 in 2609 days.

Kansas City Downtown in Metal

As I explore this medium, I find it particularly suited for architecture.  Working a larger piece has it's challenges.  It is tricky to keep the metal from bending as I constantly turn it over and over, pushing at the planes of the buildings.  I keep trying out new tools to work the metal, picking up the plastic ones more often than not. The metal ones work okay for the copper side, but seem too abrasive for the aluminum side.  Who knows what tools I'll try next?  Painting number 2493 in 2493 days. 

Mississippi River Overlook

The sky color reflecting off the water of this Mississippi River changes with every cloud bank.  What started as slate blue, turned icy, then warm as the sun peaked through.  The current looks rather swift, as movement is continuous on the surface. The trees are just starting to show their fall color, and the temps are certainly dropping!  It always takes me a few days to acclimate, and yes, I'm missing those 90 degree days!  Painting number 2492 in 2492 days. 

Harwood Water Garden

After a whole week of hot painting days, today was beautiful in this water garden!  I'm painting on site during the Water Garden Society Tour at #29 on the ticket.  I LOVE painting with the sound of the water babbling, it is so soothing.  Every place I look in this garden is another painting!  I'll be returning in the morning, and I hope to paint two more scenes before heading to the Parkville Opening Reception at 2:00! Barn through the Trees Inked

The private estate paint is always a secret, until we caravan out to the location.  What a delight to arrive on these 130 acres, with all manner of landscape to paint!  I landed right here down the winding lane to the barn, where I first sketched this scene.  I can't wait to return one day to create more paintings!  Painting number 2320 in 2320 days.

Sunflower Hill Farm

This composition grabbed me as soon as I stepped out of the car.  After scouting the grounds, I returned here to sketch.  I fully intended to then paint this in oils, but the ink rendering has a drama that leaves me fulfilled. So, I went out and drew this scene from another angle, and it sold, too!  Painting number 2310 in 2310 days.

Barn in the Trees

The Private Estate paint location is a well guarded secret, and all the artists caravan out to the location.  On arrival I spotted this barn from this angle and KNEW I had to paint here!  After a brief look at the creek beyond and the house and cabins, I returned to this spot.  I sketched this one in ink first, and decided to widen my view slightly on the painting.  Each time the sun popped out, I was quick to mark those lights and shadows, working elsewhere when heavily overcast.  This place was gorgeous beyond belief and the rain was perfectly timed!  This painting received Honorable Mention and has a new home tonight!  Painting number 2309 in 2309 days.

Early Morning at Lake Creek

I scouted 2 locations before deciding on the sweeping landscape with barn and house for my painting subject. A timed paint, I first wanted to sketch this complicated scene out. The act of sketching works out all the details in my mind before I start in with paint. That gorgeous light was fleeting, so I painted it in every time I saw it, skipping back to the masses when in shadow.  I really loved this location, even though I stood uphill sideways on uneven ground, blown by the wind and cold. Now THAT is a love of plein air!  This one came in second in the Lake Creek Paint Out and went to a new home afterwards!  Painting number 2307 in 2307 days of living the dream!

Water in the Fields

The rain had not started when I arrived on location at the Katy Trail in Defiance.  As I set up my easel and grabbed a panel, the rain began to fall.  Seeking shelter behind Good News Brewing, the wind kicked up and blew the rain in.  I scooted back as far as I could, and kept pretty dry as I painted my 10x20 panel.  I am so thankful I brought my dad's heavy duty tripod along!  With winds gusting every day to 30 mph, this tripod hardly shifts as I work.  If I were using my former tripod, I would be hanging onto it with one hand while painting with the other!  Painting number 2306 in 2306 days.

Historic Parkville Inked

Parkville is full of small town charm - especially the downtown district!  I enjoy coming here to paint, and I'm using pen and ink for this street scene.  The pilot varsity is my pen here, and I have a water brushpen in my pocket to move the ink and get my grays. It is fun as challenging to draw that sliding perspective as I look from one side to the other!  Painted during the Parkville in Art event, I just realized I had not posted this one.  Painting number 1828 in 1828 days.... if this Inge posts...... I'm having network errors tonight, and my original post will not post! 

Farm in the Heartland

With rain in the forecast, I knew I had to paint early.  After scouting the Park Farm Winery, we decided to paint one of the farms along the way. Halfway through this painting, the rain started.  I was nestled under several pines, so the actual rainfall on my palette  was minimal. But the wind was extreme.  I was SO cold,  I could hardly make my hands work correctly!  This is my first cold spell of the season - so I will have to acclimate!! Yikes!  I needed hot soup and a mug of tea after this venture!  Painting number 1736 in 1736 days.
